At Bentgrass Stables, the health, welfare, and safety of every horse in our care always comes first. This fundamental principle guides every decision we make, from the design of our facilities to the daily routines we follow.
We believe that horses thrive when they feel secure, comfortable, and loved. Our approach to horse care is holistic, considering not just their physical needs but their emotional and psychological wellbeing. Every horse is treated as an individual, with their unique personality, preferences, and requirements carefully observed and respected.
Safety is paramount in everything we do. From our meticulously maintained facilities to our experienced staff training, we ensure that both horses and humans can interact in the safest possible environment. Our comprehensive security systems, regular health monitoring, and emergency protocols provide peace of mind for horse owners and create a sanctuary where horses can flourish.
We are committed to continuous improvement and staying current with the latest developments in equestrian care. Our philosophy extends beyond basic care to creating an environment where the human-horse bond can deepen and where both horse and rider can achieve their full potential together.

In 2017, Karin McNally moved her then 7 year old warmblood gelding Bentley to Sahibi, a long-established livery property in Tokai alongside the Table Mountain National Park.
Karin had never considered running her own yard, but when Sahibi was rezoned and sub-divided into a number of smaller properties for residential development, Karin knew that she had to save the equestrian facilities, and so acquired the key livery portions of the property in 2018/9.
Sahibi had been badly neglected, and with the help of architects Phillip Briel and Christine Fish, builder Mike Gleeson and stable manager Sylvia Knight (recruited from Constantia Uitsig, together with her various cats and stable dog Coco), Karin set about renovating and expanding the facilities.
The existing stables were given higher ceilings and imported rubber matting for comfort and hygiene. The dangerous and ineffective metal "afdak" over the stable doors was replaced by a higher and wider roof to provide shelter from rain and sun. Brass nameplates were provided for all of the horses and a rest room, vegetable garden, kitchen and shower facilities added for grooms, who were also all provided with suitable workwear for the first time.
The parking area was repaved and expanded and a covered hot and cold water washbay was added. Old cowsheds were sensitively converted into an office, tack room and tea room for clients, decorated with a range of horse-related art, including some minor South African "old masters". A feed storage barn was built to ensure adequate year-round stock of lucerne, teff and shavings.
The resident manager's cottage was renovated, and facilities were added to enable the property to go off-grid if necessary, including a generator, borehole and septic tank. A comprehensive security system was installed, including alarm beams and 30+ CCTV cameras. Solar power and batteries were subsequently also added.
The paddocks layout was revised and a 400m canter track was added. Finally, the existing dressage arena was stripped back and upgraded to FEI-grade, with imported surface and properly engineered drainage so that it now stays dry all through the wet Cape winter.
All that remained was to choose a name, but in truth that was always a foregone conclusion, inspired by the horse that brought Karin to this point. The name "Bentley" originates from Old English as the combination of the words "bent" and "ley", meaning "from the bent-grass field". And so Bentgrass Stables was born.
